We have TnT Reviews here at A Spot of T most Fridays so Mushu the Bichon and I decided to do some dog product reviews here every so often as well. As is the case with TnT Reviews, we don't make any money doing this. These are simply items we love and would like to share. Or items we find to be a pain in the backside and want to warn the world about. Or at the very least the three readers who read this blog. Moving on.
I can't think of a better product to start our dog product reviews then with the DogPause Dog Bowl. And because I'm way too honest? I will say I was a bit hesitant with this product when I first came across it on the internet. But I'm also a not really rebel without a cause and was intrigued to see if this bowl really did what it said it would do. Which is to slow down ravenous eaters like Mushu. I don't think the wording was exactly like that any where on the website, but it's what I was hoping the DogPause would do.
If I didn't know better I would say Mushu was starved as a puppy and this is why he becomes blind to anything else around him when he sees food. But I do know better because he was born about 20 minutes from here and I saw him sometimes twice a day until he came home, so I know how much he was loved and cared for as a wee baby. He was always the 'big boy' of the bunch so I know there was no starvation taking place. Mushu's brothers and sisters, as he trampled over them to get to their mother's milk or to the food dishes as they got older? Were probably the ones who were starving.
I have often tried to get Mushu to slow down while he was eating but he wasn't having any of it. Not often, but sometimes he would even eat so fast he would then have to go outside and throw up. But with DogPause? Oh my.....
The picture above is what Mushu's bowl often looks like now. Do you see the food left in the bowl? It's a miracle I tell you! No longer does Mushu go to his food bowl and gulp down every single morsel in 2.5 seconds flat. He actually takes his time eating now.
I swear he would sometimes swallow his food whole in his quest to eat before...before...well who knows who he thought was going to come and steal his food. But the design of the DogPause bowl some way, some how makes him slow down when it comes to eating. I actually hear him crunching and chewing his food now. And then there are leftovers for later because obviously eating slower makes him feel fuller faster. I wonder if they make these bowls for humans? Well anyway.
I wish I would have taken a video of Mushu when I first put food in his DogPause bowl. Because the look of "What that mom?" on his face was priceless. Then when he went to eat his food, he didn't know what to think. He looked at me again as if to say "I no like this funky bowl. But I hungry like bear." He would take one kibble out, walk a few steps away and eat it, then take another kibble out, walk a few steps away and eat it. It didn't take him long to figure out the big new bowl wasn't going to swallow him whole though and it's been heaven ever since.
I would write more about the bowl, like what it is made of etc., but the DogPause site is chock-full of any information you could ever want to know about this product. I will say that when I went to pay for the DogPause bowl, it wouldn't allow me to put in Canada. If this hasn't been changed on the ordering page yet and you are in Canada and would like to order the bowl, don't let this stop you from ordering because DogPause definitely delivers to Canada. I simply used their 'contact us' page to find an email address and within a day or two, a lovely man by the name of John contacted me. Within the day of writing back to him, I received an email telling me the bowls were on their way and I had them in my hot little hands in about a week.
Great service, great price, really sturdy and fun looking dog bowl. But most importantly I now have a dog who no longer makes himself sick by eating his food too fast. He now takes his time and savors the really expensive non-allergenic food I have to buy for him because he's allergic to everything under the sun when it comes to dog food.
Mushu the Bichon and I give the DogPause Dog Bowl 5 out of 5 paws-up
